The below remarks were given by Dr. Michael Rubin, Principal at Uxbridge High School in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, at an awards event in May 2025.
This evening, we are celebrating both academic achievement and a dedicated group of students who have embraced an enhanced standard of learning here at Uxbridge High School. The ballot question removing a certain standard of performance on MCAS testing as a graduation requirement left us with an opportunity, one we seized and have used to support the programs that have been so important to many of our students and the community alike.
The Uxbridge CAPS Diploma represents a meaningful accomplishment, a second diploma earned by students who have shown strong dedication and commitment to their future. To stand before us tonight as recipients, these students have successfully met at least four criteria from a list of six options. This includes achieving ‘meeting or exceeding expectations’ on all three MCAS exams, completing the technical course requirements of a specialized career pathway such as Manufacturing Engineering or Biomedical Science, participating in Advanced Placement courses, gaining college-level experience through dual enrollment, earning industry-recognized credentials, or completing an intensive internship or comprehensive Capstone project.
What these students have accomplished is noteworthy. They have challenged themselves, explored areas of interest, and actively prepared for their future careers and higher education. We are proud of their dedication, curiosity, and drive.
Additionally, we want to acknowledge that Uxbridge High School is the only program in Massachusetts to be affiliated with the CAPS Network. This connection provides our students with valuable experiences and insights, and tonight’s recipients are the first to benefit from this opportunity in our state. I speak for Mr. Moura, who has worked closely with our senior interns and the CAPS Network, in sharing our gratitude for the intersection of the international impact of CAPS and its iteration here in Uxbridge.
Please join me in congratulating the inaugural class of Uxbridge CAPS Diploma recipients. Their commitment and hard work represent a positive step forward, and we are pleased to honor them tonight.
