Maritime High School Students Complete Year One of Marine Engineering Program

Our intrepid cohort of 17 Maritime High School juniors completed the first half of their two-year Marine Engineering Tech program at Seattle Maritime Academy (SMA). All the students have either completed or almost completed their paperwork to receive their Merchant Mariner Credentials as Ordinary Seaman/Wipers, and will continue next year to complete the remaining coursework.

Students have expressed interest in working as professional crew on commercial vessels of all sizes, further developing their engineering skills and credentials, and some are planning to continue on to one of the Maritime Academies after they graduate. Upon completion of this MHS/SMA program and a 90-day internship-at-sea, the students will be qualified to receive their USCG QMED certification—Qualified Member of the Engineer Department.
