Profession-Based Learning in Middle School

Middle School CAPS

Why Bring CAPS to Middle School?

Middle school is one of the most formative stages in a student’s journey. It’s a time when curiosity runs high, identity is taking shape, and the first big decisions about the future begin to emerge. Too often, however, students experience this stage as disconnected from the real world.

At CAPS, we believe middle school can be a launchpad for discovery. By introducing profession-based learning (Pro-BL) during these critical years, we can:

  • Help students connect classroom learning with real-world application.

  • Build durable skills like communication, collaboration, and adaptability at an earlier age.

  • Spark a sense of purpose and possibility that inspires them to keep learning.

This is about more than preparing for careers — it’s about giving young learners the chance to see themselves as capable contributors to their communities and the wider world.

A Middle School Framework for Pro-BL

Drawing from the proven CAPS model at the high school level, we are designing a framework tailored specifically for middle school learners.

  • Self-Discovery: Create space for students to reflect on interests, strengths, and values as they begin to form their identities.
  • Exploration: Provide meaningful exposure to industries and professions through guest speakers, community connections, and project-based learning.
  • Durable Skills: Develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in age-appropriate ways.

  • Real-World Connection: Align classroom content with authentic challenges students can understand and impact.

  • Teacher Empowerment: Support educators with tools and strategies to weave profession-based learning into everyday instruction.

A Sandbox for Middle School Educators

Innovation requires experimentation. That’s why CAPS is creating the Middle School Sandbox — the first-of-its-kind community space designed for educators. Think of the Sandbox as a playground for innovation — a safe space to explore, reflect, and create the future of middle school learning together.

The Sandbox will be a dynamic hub where middle level educators can:

  • Test new ideas for bringing profession-based learning into the classroom.

  • Share successes, lessons learned, and classroom resources.

  • Collaborate across schools, districts, and even states.

This network will convene a community in the spirit of what CAPS Network cultivates for high school educators – a family that shares best practices, troubleshoots challenges and celebrates successes together.

Meet Our CAPS Middle School Pilot Affiliates

This past January, we launched our Pilot Affiliate cohort with 16 programs spanning 11 states, from small rural schools serving fewer than 100 students to large districts with over 6,000 students, and everything in between. Four of our affiliates are virtual schools, reflecting the diverse ways students learn today. This is a network built for the full spectrum of how middle school looks across the country, making it possible for any program to engage in the work.

Strategic Partners

This work is fueled by visionary partners who share our commitment to reimagining education. We are grateful for their leadership and support in helping us take CAPS to the middle school level. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a movement that will redefine the middle school experience.

  • Britebound: A national leader in preparing students for career exploration and success.

  • Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE): The premier organization supporting middle grades educators worldwide.

Middle grades educators have the exciting opportunity to interact with students at a pivotal time in their development. The middle grades are “the finding place” that invites young adolescents to be adventurous explorers.
